Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is overlanding?

The concept of traveling overland through Africa has been around for years. Overlanding is more than just enjoying an amazing destination, it’s about experiencing the journey of getting there.

Using fully kitted and modified 4x4’s, overlanding is a safe way to travel in Southern Africa, with a group of like-minded travelers. In a way, it is independent travel, but in the safety and fun of being in a group, and without the hassles of organizing and planning it all yourself!

Traveling by road affords a unique opportunity to experience beautiful but often less-visited parts of Africa. Navigating villages, shopping at local markets, dodging cows and taxis are all part of the fun that is not often experienced on a traditional wildlife fly-in safari. It’s an adventure.

  • Do we travel in a set convoy?

Some days your guide may lead in convoy style where necessary (eg; off the beaten track 4x4 trails) but on most days, after some briefing the previous evening, you are free to travel at your own pace, stopping when and where you like. On these days, your guide will become the rear vehicle and ensure everybody is in camp safely at the end of the day. In game reserves, you are free to explore on your own - which is exciting.

  • How do the Explorations tours work?

A tour with us is designed to be easy for you. All our tours start and end in a town/city which has an International airport - so you just need to arrive, collect your vehicle, meet up with the rest of the group and let the fun begin.

Our tours are self-drive, self-catered and guided by an experienced guide in his/her own vehicle. So you’re on your own, but also, you’re not. You’re in the safety of a group led by a guide who frequently visits these wild areas.

Usually the first two nights and the last night or two are in carefully selected hotels, and then the rest of the time you will be camping.

The vehicles are all fully equipped for 4 people. They have 2x roof-top tents and all the necessary camping gear.

  • Do I need 4x4 or off-road driving experience?

We don’t take part in extreme off roading on our tours, but you do need to be a confident and capable driver. Some previous 4x4 experience does not go amiss, but is not essential. We will provide some hints and tips and thorough briefings for certain challenging roads or obstacles when needed. All vehicles and the lead vehicle have recovery gear, which is explained when collecting the vehicle.

  • Is it safe to travel in Africa on a self-drive tour?

Your safety is our priority. We provide detailed safety guidelines, emergency contacts, and support throughout your journey. Africa offers remarkable experiences when you travel responsibly and stay informed. We'll ensure you're well-prepared.

All tours are led by an experienced guide who is equipped with basic tools, a first aid kit and a satellite phone.

  • Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. It is a prerequisite to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, vehicle-related incidents, and unforeseen events. It's essential for your peace of mind during the journey.

  • What documentation do I need for a self drive tour in Africa?

You'll need a valid passport and any required visas for the countries you will visit. Please ensure that you make all the necessary enquiries with your travel agent or embassy in this regard. We can also provide guidance if you’re unsure. An international driver's license is not required for those coming from commonwealth countries, however we recommend getting one.

  • Do you have a refund policy?

Explorations offers a refund policy based on the time of cancellation. Please refer to our terms and conditions for detailed information.

  • Can we book a tour outside of your set departures?

Absolutely! We can run tours at other times of the year that might suit you better and can also provide guidance on best times. Our tours run with a minimum of 16 people or 4 vehicles. So bring your friends or family along. If you have a smaller group and still want to travel, we can also accommodate you at an adjusted rate, so please get in touch!

  • Can you assist with add-on safaris or other bookings?

Yes we certainly can! A lot of travelers add some time before or after the overland adventure for a specific safari or holiday.

The perfect addition to your adventure is a few nights in a luxury safari lodge being spoiled and experiencing some superb wildlife viewing, or some time in the winelands of South Africa! The overland tours usually end in a town where you can make an easy connection to some of the greatest private safari camps and lodges around. We would love to assist you with additional bookings, to really make the most of your time in Africa!

We can also book you into a hotel at the Airport if you arrive a day early. We also work with a local travel agent who can assist you with your regional flights in Southern Africa.

  • What vaccinations do I need? And what about malaria?

Please consult your travel doctor or travel clinic for advice for the specific countries you will be visiting. Having the correct vaccinations is your responsibility.

Our tours are conducted in the time of the year when mosquitos are less of a problem, however you must obtain advice from your own doctor or travel clinic on precautions and suitable prophylaxis.

Covering up from dawn to dusk and using insect repellent are also good ideas.

  • Where is Explorations based?

We are based in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa and conduct our tours into our neighboring countries of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

  • Did South Africa really win the Rugby World Cup 4 times?

    Yes.
